Primus New Years print!!!

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Printing just finished on my latest poster for Primus!!!

They are doing a 2 night show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland for New Years and I wanted to try and do something special for Primus fans. The image is comprised of characters that are references to Primus song lyrics, album art work, music videos, etc. Took a while to get it all down but was fun going back and pulling out the ol’ Primus albums to do the research. Take a look and see how many you can get.

Gene Ween & Blackberry Belles poster/flier…

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Here is new art I threw together for the Blackberry Belles. This is not an official Gene Ween poster and will not be screenprinted so dont ask to buy it or send me hate mail that its not “official”.  It is a promotional flier that was commissioned and for online and pre-show promo use (aka digital prints hung up around town).  Show is at the Black Cat in DC. Regardless, sure to be a killer show… wish I was there.

AXE McCord!!!!

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I came across this old comic in a used bookstore in Atlanta in the 50 cent bin.  Trippy cover got me immediately.  It got 2 stories in it but I only really cared about one,… AXE McCORD!!!!!  Story about a space-rocker who summons the spirit of Timi Bendrix’s guitar skills to fight the evil Captain Feedback (Beethoven back from the dead & pissed off at the state of current music) and his music zombies. Its a self-published book by Ken Landgraf who went on to do work for DC, Marvel and even a comic for legendary rocker…. THOR!!!!

I didn’t post the whole thing,.. but enough to get the gist. Check it… epic dialogue.

Norah Jones at the Greek Theatre print

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

While over here i was able to do a gig for a show apart of the the “LaLaLand Greek Theatre LA 2010″ poster series. Norah Jones with Corinne Bailey Rae.

Obvious influence but i thought it was fitting. And the peacock… mainly because i noticed she hasn’t used any imagery from her Indian heritage in the past and thats all i see.

Traveling around Jaipur I came across a bunch of huge screenprinted blacklight posters advertising a Circus in town. They were littered around the city, must have been hundreds of them… good looking prints.

Fauladi

One of the things i wanted to do while in India was track down some old Bollywood movie posters. In Haus Kauz Village there are 2 or 3 shops that will hook you up. These places are small but packed to the brim with posters/movie memorabilia/trinkets.  We found one in a back alley and the place was overflowing with cool stuff.  I forget the name of the store but the owner was a nice guy… knew a lot about Bollywood cinema.

Flatstock India… kinda

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

I missed Flatstock (poster show) in San Francisco last weekend, but made up for it by finding the Indian equivalent.  In the Haus Kauz area of Delhi, I came across a gallery show in which a number of people were showing their wares in the form of these really intricate West Bengali hand-painted “Patua” paintings.  Tradionally these Patua artists travel town-to-town, house-to-house, unraveling these paintings (which alot of times come as huge scrolls) as a form of storytelling entertainment.  The painting tells stories either symbolically or sequentially like a giant comic strip and are often accompanied by a song.  One woman kept breaking into a new song everytime i picked up a new print while leafing through them… which prompted me to awkwadly smile and leave quickly.

Unfortunetly it was pretty dark in the spot so taking pictures was pretty hard but it was pretty big with like 10 artists or so.  I found a painting of 2 planes with maniacally smiling faces on the front flying toward the Twin Towers as Bush & Bin Laden talked on the phone below which someone bought before i could take a picture of it.  I did buy some paintings from this guy,.. who for the life of me i can’t remember his name.  Nice guy though.

(UPDATE - found small pic of Bin Laden plane.. even though it looks like a turtle):

Sizes ranged from 9′ x 12′ – 18′ x 24′, including scrolls that were at least 12 ft. long.  Cool, but where the hell you hang that.  Prices were all over the place.. $8 - $140.  In India haggling with prices is standard,… but in the end, you gotta respect the art and time in a hand-done piece.
