Bonnie Raitt North Bay Fire Relief benefit in Oakland print…
I had the honor of being asked to do a print for the legendary, BONNIE RAITT who teamed up with Tipping Point & Another Planet Entertainment to put on a benefit show in Oakland for the North Bay Fire Relief Fund. The proceeds went to North Bay community foundations, service providers and government partners supporting low-income communities hit hardest by the fires.
The initial concept for the artwork was that of a Phoenix rising from the ashes but figured it might be a little too on the nose and didn’t exactly want to represent fire/ashes in the design. Instead the idea morphed into having Bonnies’ signature stratocaster somewhat represent a “Phoenix-like” character and flesh it out with lots of color & spirally filagree.
The posters were available at the show and I will have about 40 copies signed by me / AP (Artist print) available on Monday, March 26th @ 11am (PST).
Leftover Salmon poster at The Stanley Hotel.
For the last couple years now “slamgrass” band, LEFTOVER SALMON has held an annual event at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO also known as “The Overlook Hotel” from the horror classic, The Shining. Guests are encouraged to dress up and the whole weekend is themed after the film. I was happy to get an invite to do the poster for the show and work with the band for the first time.
Obviously when coming up with concepts for the poster working imagery from the film was important. The previous years posters had been more portraits of characters from the film and I wanted to try a different route.
The typewriter plays a huge roll in the film and was an easy starting point for me. I thought using it to represent Jack, especially from the “bar scene” where he truly starts to lose it was perfect and tried to use smokey filagree to work in other imagery (twins, axe, etc..) including a “fleur di lis” representing Mardi Gras.
The poster has a print run of 200 (signed/numbered) which were initially available at the show & I will have about 25 copies (#175-200) from the run available on Monday, March 12th @ 11am (PST). Before people start asking,… there are NO VARIANTS of this print.
Sweetwater Brewery 21st Anniversary!!!!!
This weekend is Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewing‘s 21st Anniversary and they pulled out all the stops throwing a big concert at their brewery to celebrate featuring bands Dirty Heads, Twiddle & People’s Blues of Richmond. They contacted me to come up w/ a design for posters & shirts that would match the chill vibe of the brewery and the bands playing.
“Don’t Float the Mainstream” is Sweetwater’s slogan and references the way they approach making beer as well as the lifestyle they celebrate. The brewery is a very lively place with tie-dyes hanging about, music playing, and a lot of pictures of fish. A lot. Their love for fishing is evident on their packaging as well, so I knew that that this was something that needed to work its way into the design. I wanted a concept that would be very colorful and pretty trippy so I decided on a kind of Hop spirit, especially one with killer mossy sideburns. The concept had a couple different variations and in the end we decided to build the character out more and work the show info as well as some more imagery into colorful smoke-like filagree along the sides.
The print is a 6-color screenprint (18′ x 24′) with a print run of 250, sold initially at the brewery this weekend. They were printed using a great metallic Gold that is pretty eye-catching.
I will be releasing an Artist Edition run of 30 (signed/numbered), on Monday, February 19th…. including a small run of 10 printed on a “lava” foil paper.
