Chris Cornell Tour hits Phoenix, AZ – gigposter

CCornell_Phx

I’ve been an old school Soundgarden fan for a long time and was thrilled to work with them a few years back. Now their lead singer Chris Cornell has been hitting the road to promote his new solo album, Higher Truth and I got the call to do a print for the Phoenix, AZ stop.

Chris Cornell concepts

Cornell is a badass and the concept had to be just as fitting. Of the bat, Phoenix is a town and is in a part of the country that has a ton of imagery associated with it …rustic dangerous desert environments, Native American history, Kachina dolls, etc. Originally I was headed more in the Native American direction when I remembered that “Dia De Los Muertos” falls right around the date of the show and would be perfect. I tried out a couple classic painted ladies and Day of the Dead skeletons before shifting gears a bit and focusing in on more of a guitar wielding bandito skeleton.

The final poster is a 5-color, (18’x 24′) print printed by the folks at In-House Press and has a print run of 150 which will be available by the band at the show. I will have a small run of signed/AP Artist prints for sale on (Fri) November 6th @ 11AM (PST).

TRPS collaboration poster with Marq Spusta…… “The Spunig Tree”.

TRPS 2015

One of my favorite shows to do every year is TRPS Festival of Rock Posters in San Francisco. The folks who put it on are the best and I have been doing it since I started doing poster back in 2006 or so. As a fan of posters myself I have gotten to meet some of the my idols who were the a big part of the original 1960’s Bill Graham Fillmore scene (Wes Wilson, Lee Conklin, etc..). The show really is a fan service and every year they produce a print to help raise money, in this case for the “TRPS Artist Relief Trust”.

TRPS 2015 concepts

Buddy Marq Spusta & I have been talking about doing a collaborative print for years and figured this was the perfect opportunity. Our handdrawn styles are somewhat similar, sometimes he goes a bit looser… sometimes I cleaner, but we figured the imagery would mesh well. For the process we sent some sketches back and forth making the 2 eyeball characters the initial focus.

The obvious development was to make the overall image resemble a face but the problem was pulling it off without trying too hard. For the actual artwork, we ended up drawing the different elements of the poster individually, eventually piecing them together like a big puzzle.

Monolith Press did a great job printing them up and we gave 100 copies of the original gold to TRPS to sell at the show which I think they pretty much ran through. Marq & I kept a couple as well as some variants (Silver, Blue, Foil & Super awesome Sparkle Foil) which we sold at the show. I will have a limited amount (20 copies) of the Original “Gold” print for sale. I’ll be putting up 15… and holding 5 for a later date.

In regards to variants,…I have about 1 of each I will be putting up for sale. I am not sure how I will sell these at this point without it being a complete mess and people saying they didn’t get a chance. I might just put them up on eBay. We’ll see….

The String Cheese Incident take over NYC,… gigposter.

String Cheese Incident - NYC - 2015

The String Cheese Incident hit up New York City this weekend and blew it up at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. I was happy to get the gig as I know it is a big show on the tour and glad to work with the SCI folks again. I only wish I could have been there.

SCI_concept3

I went through a slew of concepts for this one as I wanted something that worked in some classic NYC imagery. I recently did a Statue of Liberty themed piece for a Tame Impala piece and didn’t really want to do a repeat but it was too hard to pass up making a giant Hooper Lady over looking the city. Though it is a bit corny, being a Knicks fan, I had to indulge and throw a bball themed concept in the mix.

It is a beautiful 6-color print done by the fine folks at Good Thoughts (Boulder, CO) and is 18’x24′. The band had a run of 400 print run and I have a small run of signed/numbered Artist Prints UP NOW IN THE STORE.
